Eating Italian food should feel like you’re at Grandma’s house sitting around the table with your family indulging in gigantic portions of pasta. On a gluten-free diet, it might seem like a daunting task, but cooking gluten-free Italian food is actually pretty simple. Just follow a few simple rules.
Step 1: Use the freshest ingredients you can find.
Step 2: Use basic cooking techniques.
Step 3: Use simple seasonings to bring out the natural flavors of the food. Some of the best are garlic, thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano, parsley, bay leaves and basil.
If you travel to Italy to experience the cuisine first hand, you’ll find the ingredients and dishes prepared vary greatly by region. Even cooking times and seasonings are regionally influenced. Beef, veal and pork dishes are very popular in the Northern region, whereas tomato-based dishes and grilled meats are traditional in Central Italy. Southern Italy is well known for its use of vegetables and desserts. And of course, fish and seafood dishes are coveted in the coastal regions. In all areas of Italy, wine and cheese are staples of most meals, as is espresso.
The good news is that most of these dishes are naturally gluten-free. Pizza and pasta are a little bit more difficult for those on a gluten-free diet. But the good news is that with some simple substitutions, you can enjoy these dishes too. And, today’s gluten-free market features a variety of ready made crusts, mixes and pastas that can easily be ordered from www.glutenfreely.com and be delivered right to your doorstep.
For example, try brown rice or corn pasta in place of wheat pasta (Scar Pasta, Tinkyada Pasta or Ancient Harvest Pasta). Or, forgo pasta altogether and try using spaghetti squash or ribboned zucchini for your noodles. For pizza, try blending flours, an on-the-market gluten-free flour blend or a mix from one of dozens of companies. Or, forgo the traditional pizza crust and use eggplant or large mushroom caps as the crust. Stick to traditional Italian herbs and spices and your homemade Italian meal will be mouthwateringly delicious!
